We have a SON!!!

8lbs 8.8oz, 20 3/4in

Birth Story: My membranes were swept on Thursday morning and the doctor was pretty confident it would work so my family (mom, dad, Jeffrey, Ashley and Brighton) came up from Colorado to be here for the big moment. We did lots of walking to get things going, but nothing. By Saturday evening we figured it didn't work so they went back home since Ashley had to fly out at 8am Sunday morning. After everyone left my James and I cleaned up and went to bed. I was having some back pain and thought it was from all the walking. Once in bed I told James that I thought I was having contractions and we should time them. I rolled over to grab my phone and my water broke! We laughed so hard. I made my way to the bathroom and realized it was a yellow/green color so we called my doctor, he had me come in right away. We then called my parents and they had only been home for 20 minutes, so they turned back around and met us at the hospital. Once checked in I was dilated to 4cm and contractions were coming every 2/3 minutes. I was having severe back labor at this point and after 5 hours choose to get an epidural (was at 7cm). Contractions then stalled. It took another 6 hours before I could begin pushing. My epi was wearing off, but that was okay since I was hoping to go natural. I pushed for 2 hours and Nathan was not making much progress...he was stuck at my pelvic bone. We choose to try the vacuum. So I pushed for another 15 minutes while the doctor used the vacuum...no progress was being made and I was getting worn out. A c-section decision was made and  30 minutes later Nathan made his appearance!! James got to announce his gender to me and I just cried tears of joy because we had a son!
He came out blue and not breathing, I remember yelling "make him cry, do something"...and after what seemed like forever he made a whimper! He was taken away and James went with him. Once I was back in my recovery room they brought Nathan in and he was doing great...he had a cone shaped head and lots of bruising, but scored an 8 on his 2nd Apgar. Breastfeeding was a challenge at the beginning because he was so anxious that he could not latch on. He dropped almost a pound in the 1st 24 hours and became very jaundice. We began to breastfeed, supplement and pump...he is gaining back his weight rapidly! Due to his biliruben (jaundice) coming back at 16, 17 and 18 we stayed a few extra days in the hospital. Recovery is going slow for me since I had a tear from pushing and then a larger than normal c-section cut.

We are now home and loving life with Nathan!!

  1. He is absolutely adorable! Man, you just never know when they're going to come ... and how. I'm so sorry you had such a tough labor, and the scare of him not breathing ... I know how that moment feels. I'm so glad he started quickly on his own!! Best wishes to you and yours. God is good--you have a son!!!!!
